Asia Top 50: No 5 MediaTek

Interview with one of the top-ranked IR teams in Greater China

A year on from its first appearance in the All-Asia Top 50 in joint ninth place, MediaTek is now fifth in the wider region and fourth in Greater China. Sophia Lang, Jessie Wang and Angela Hsaio all remain in the IR team but they have an additional team member as well: Rainy Wang, who joined in June this year. Meanwhile, David Ku, the company’s CFO, remains firmly committed to MediaTek’s investor relations program and continues to meet investors on a regular basis.

Indeed, Ku, whose name crops up repeatedly in IR Magazine’s 2015 Asia research, attracts enthusiastic praise from the investment community. According to one Taiwanese sell-sider, he is ‘a great presenter’ who can converse comprehensively, and knows everything about both his company and its industry.

Asked if there have been any changes to the IR program since last year, Wang says things are all ‘pretty similar. We continue to use our IR website, IR meeting management system and email distribution list to communicate with investors online. We also conduct non-deal roadshows, attend conferences and invite investors and analysts to join our major trade shows and corporate events to communicate with them face to face.’

In terms of the broader context, Wang notes that ‘the smartphone business is a fast-changing industry and customer demand is very strongly related to the macroeconomy.’ As a result, she says, ‘investors and analysts pay a lot of attention to changes in the macro environment, as well as to company strategies.’
