Stephen Nightingale of Britvic talks ESG strategy and near-term headwinds

Britvic was nominated for best ESG materiality reporting (mid-cap) at the IR Magazine Awards – Europe 2022

IR Magazine caught up with Stephen Nightingale, director of IR at soft drinks company Britvic, at the IR Magazine Awards – Europe 2022, where the business was nominated for best ESG materiality reporting (mid-cap).

‘We relaunched our strategy at the end of 2019, and a key part of our strategy is sustainability,’ said Nightingale. ‘We use the framework ‘healthier people, healthier planet’. And if you look at our website and IR materials, you’ll see ‘healthier people, healthier planet’ front and center of the strategy, and we are embedding it across the business.’

Nightingale also discussed the main challenges facing IR teams this year. ‘I think the biggest challenge at the moment is the high-cost inflation that’s playing out across all businesses,’ he said.

‘From investors the concern is: what will that mean for consumer confidence in the second half of 2022 and [on into] 2023? At the moment it feels like a lot of the market is risk-off and risk-averse, and we just need to keep telling the story and hope that investors can see through the near-term headwinds.’
