While shareholder resolutions covering environmental or social issues may not pass, they are still important to consider because they may flag issues that could affect your company’s legal risk or reputation, says Sarah Altschuller, an attorney at Foley Hoag.

The investor relations officer may not be the person who ends up responding to questions on sustainability, but it is nevertheless important that he or she understands the company’s message and strategy in this area, to ensure all external communication is consistent, Altschuller adds.
