30 IR stars in 30 days: CN

To celebrate 30 years of IR Magazine, our new series highlights the achievements of 30 IR stars from the last three decades

IR Magazine has a long history of honoring those men, women and companies around the world that excel at investor relations. In celebration of 30 years of IR Magazine, we selected 30 IR stars that have shone particularly brightly over the past three decades and will be posting one profile each day for 30 days, giving you the gift of an IR advent calendar.

CN is no stranger to the IR Magazine Awards in Canada, having picked up 46 trophies since 2001. Whether the IR program has been led by Robert Noorigian, who ran the department from 1996 to 2012, Janet Drysdale, who was vice president of investor relations from 2012 to 2016, or Paul Butcher, who has led the function since 2016, the company has continued to run its IR department to a high standard.

‘At CN, there is a strong buy-in from senior management,’ says Butcher. ‘I report directly to the CEO and I’m part of the senior leadership team. The board feels that the IR person talking to the investment community needs to be up to date on the company strategy.’

In a recent expanded Q&A with Butcher, he talked about targeting the right investor with the right message through the right channel, which involves balancing more than 30 analysts and countless different investors.

Stay tuned for more IR stars this month and pick up a copy of the winter issue of IR Magazine to see the full list.

A version of this article was published in the winter 2018 issue of IR Magazine – the 30th anniversary issue of the industry’s premier publication.
