Understand the nature and dynamics of the business, says Gary Rawlinson, head of investor relations at Galiform. Establish working relationships with the company’s CEO and CFO early on, so that they are happy to have an open-door policy with the IR department, he advises. It is also important to develop informal relationships with the sell side and buy side, Rawlinson adds, as this allows for open discussion about the business and wider market issues.
