Aegon names new head of IR
The Hague-headquartered Aegon has promoted IR officer Jan Willem Weidema to head of investor relations.
Weidema, who joined the life insurance and pensions major in 2013 after a career start in equity research, is succeeding IR head of seven years Willem van den Berg, who is moving on to serve as head of global finance transformation, a role overseeing ‘global implementation of IFRS 9 and IFRS 17’, according to Aegon’s website.
‘My intention is to build on the successful existing IR strategy and continue to serve the investor community with a group of highly qualified investor relations officers,’ Weidema tells IR Magazine.
The AEX index constituent, which is dual-listed in Amsterdam and New York, is 40 percent owned by US investors, so the IR team conducts ‘a large number of conferences and roadshows on both sides of the Atlantic,’ Weidema says. ‘So far, we are seeing no disruption from Mifid II, although there are a few signs of changing buy-side and sell-side behavior. Some investors have indicated that we should approach them directly for roadshows and not through brokers. Other buy-side firms are building in-house corporate access capabilities.’
The Aegon IR team is considering several options, one of which is the use of digital solutions allowing direct interaction with the buy side. These newly introduced platforms offer roadshow organization capabilities and feedback tools for IROs to engage fund managers virtually – or not.
‘In our interactions with analysts and investors, we are using modern technologies and will continue to develop this in 2018,’ Weidema says. ‘At the same time, there is still a lot of value in meeting investors face to face.’
