‘Communications gap’ between companies and investors leaves door open to activists, says survey
Close to half of investors do not proactively engage with the management of companies they invest in or follow, creating a ‘communications gap’ that could be exploited by activist investors, according to new research.  Just 55 percent of investors surveyed by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) would describe their engagement approach as ‘active’, while only 57 percent say they would feel comfortable speaking directly to management about any frustrations they...

Shaping Trillium’s plans for 2020
Trillium filed nine board or executive diversity proposals in 2019, up from four last year. What’s behind that focus? This first effort was a proof of concept to see what the results and outcomes would be, and we thought it was very positive both in terms of companies making commitments to improve diversity and, when we did need to go to a vote, getti...

Opinion: How companies should interpret Larry Fink’s letter
Rather than getting caught up in a debate over fiduciary duty or whether or not sustainability or ESG performance is material, let’s just cut to the chase on the latest BlackRock letter. IR Magazine Winter 2019
A light in the dark I recently spoke to Jim Toes, CEO of the Security Traders Association, about how the unprecedented number of issuer letters sent to the SEC about the access-fee pilot last year could be a sign that IR teams are getting more up to speed on market structure issues. He cited the increase in trading activity on dark pools as another issue IR teams need to be aware of. ‘Understanding where your stock is traded, why and b...
