Online platform launched to push for investor action on climate change

Investor Platform for Climate Actions to measure carbon footprints and fossil fuel divestments

A series of organizations advocating for action on climate change have launched an online platform to track diverse efforts to inspire investors to further action in a bid to push the corporate world towards a low-carbon economy.

The Investor Platform for Climate Actions is meant as a global hub to track investor engagement with fossil fuel companies, energy-intensive corporations and others. It will also measure climate impact with data such as carbon footprints of investor portfolios and track the reallocation of investments away from carbon emissions and toward low-carbon assets, the founders say in a press release.

The founders of the platform include the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) in Europe, the Ceres’ Investor Network on Climate Risk in North America and the Asia Investor Group on Climate Change as well as the UN-backed Principles of Responsible Investment.

‘From reducing emissions in their portfolios to investing in renewable energy and engaging with fossil fuel companies on climate change, investors are working hard for a low carbon transition,’ Stephanie Pfeifer, chief executive officer of IIGCC, says in the release. ‘An ambitious global deal which sets a clear pathway towards a low carbon future would enable them to scale up these actions and go further.’

The group also aims to increase momentum to combat climate change among the investor community in the lead-up to the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP21, in Paris late this year.

‘By showcasing the broad range of climate actions being undertaken by the investor community globally, investors are determined to encourage further initiatives and help drive momentum for an ambitious global climate deal in Paris in December,’ the press release says.
